Everyday Habits That Keep Affordable Jewelry Looking New

Budget-friendly pieces are often plated, filled or made from base metals such as brass, copper or stainless steel, so a little routine care goes a long way. Most wear and dulling comes from friction, moisture and contact with everyday products rather than from age alone.

Put it on last, take it off first

Perfume, hairspray, lotion and sunscreen can leave a film on metal and wear down plating over time. Get dressed, finish your skincare and let it settle, then add jewelry. At the end of the day, remove pieces before washing your face, showering or exercising. Chlorinated pools, salt water and sweat are especially hard on plated finishes and can loosen glued stones.

Clean gently

  • Wipe pieces with a soft, dry microfiber or jewelry cloth after wearing to remove oils.
  • For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, a soft brush for crevices, then dry thoroughly.
  • Skip abrasive polishes, toothpaste and harsh dips on plated items, as they can strip the top layer.
  • Keep pearls, glued settings and faux stones away from soaking; a damp cloth is safer.

Store pieces apart

Air and humidity speed up tarnish, and metal rubbing against metal causes scratches. Small zip bags, a lined box with compartments, or soft pouches keep items separate. Adding a silica gel packet or an anti-tarnish strip to your storage helps in damp rooms like bathrooms, which are best avoided altogether. Fasten chains before storing them; our guide on layering necklaces without tangles has more ideas for keeping chains tidy.

Check and refresh

Every few weeks, look over clasps, jump rings and earring backs. A loose ring can often be closed with flat-nose pliers, and replacement backs are cheap to keep on hand. If plating has worn through on a favourite piece, a local jeweler may be able to advise whether re-plating is worthwhile.
